Why Eyeglasses Insurance Isn’t Always Worth It

We hear it all the time. “Do you take VSP or EyeMed?.”

Vision insurance has become so common that many people assume it’s the smartest (and cheapest) way to buy glasses.

But here’s the reality: eyeglasses insurance often doesn’t deliver the value people think it does.

Let’s break down why.

1. The Illusion of Savings

At first glance, vision insurance feels like a win. You pay a monthly premium, and in return, you get a “covered” pair of glasses each year.

But when you actually look at the numbers:

  • Annual premiums often total $150–$300+

  • Frame allowances are typically $120–$200

  • Lens coverage is often basic only

What you’re really getting is a discount program with restrictions, not true insurance.

In many cases, you could spend the same amount—or less—buying glasses outright, with far more flexibility.

2. Limited Frame Selection (and Why It Matters)

Most insurance plans push patients toward a restricted in-network of frames. These are often:

  • Mass-produced

  • Designed for high turnover

  • Built with lower-cost materials

You’ll notice a pattern: the frames that are “fully covered” tend to be the ones you’re least excited about.

Why? Because insurance companies negotiate pricing with large manufacturers—not independent designers focused on craftsmanship, fit, and longevity.

At a Eye Designs, the focus is different:

  • Unique, small-batch collections

  • Better materials (titanium, acetate, handcrafted finishes)

  • Frames that are designed to last—not just to meet a price point

3. The Truth About “Covered” Lenses

This is where things really matter—and where insurance often falls short.

Most plans cover only the most basic lenses, which means:

  • Standard plastic materials

  • Minimal or outdated coatings

  • Limited customization

But modern lenses are far more advanced than what insurance typically includes.

High-quality lenses can offer:

  • Sharper optics with digital surfacing

  • Reduced glare and reflections

  • Better durability and scratch resistance

  • Blue light management and UV protection

  • Customization based on how you actually use your eyes

Insurance plans often treat these upgrades as “extras”—but in reality, they’re what make glasses truly perform. At Eye Designs we consider these things essentials.

4. Built to Last vs. Built to Qualify

There’s a fundamental difference between products designed to meet insurance criteria and those designed for long-term performance.

Insurance-driven products are often:

  • Built to hit a price target

  • Replaced frequently

  • Less durable over time

Higher-quality eyewear is:

  • Crafted to last for years

  • More comfortable for daily wear

  • A better long-term investment

5. The Better Alternative: Invest in What You Wear Every Day

You wear your glasses all day, every day. They’re not just an accessory—they’re a tool you rely on constantly.

Instead of focusing on what’s “covered,” it’s worth asking:

  • Do I love how these feel?

  • Do I see as clearly as possible?

  • Will these hold up over time?

When you invest directly in quality eyewear, you’re not just buying glasses—you’re investing in comfort, clarity, and confidence.

Final Thoughts

Vision insurance can be helpful in certain situations—but when it comes to eyewear, it often prioritizes cost control over quality.

The result?
Lower-quality frames, basic lenses, and limited choices.

If you’ve ever walked away from an insurance purchase feeling underwhelmed, you’re not alone.

The good news is that there’s another option:

  • Thoughtfully selected frames

  • Lenses tailored to your life

  • A focus on quality over shortcuts

Because at the end of the day, the real question isn’t:
“What does my insurance cover?”

It’s:
“Do I love my glasses?”

Who Really Makes Your Glasses?

The eyewear industry is far more consolidated than most consumers realize. Here's what's happening behind the designer labels — and why it matters where you shop.

The Illusion of Choice

Picture yourself in a mall, walking past LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, Ray-Ban and Oakley. Different storefronts, different logos, different price points. It feels like a competitive marketplace. But here's the thing: all of those brands belong to the same parent company — EssilorLuxottica.

That's not a coincidence or a quirk. It's the structure of the global eyewear industry. When you walk from one "competing" optical retailer to the next, you are, in most cases, simply moving between different floors of the same house. Even many “independent stores” fall under the EssilorLuxottica spell.

One Company. An Entire Industry.

EssilorLuxottica doesn't just own retail chains — it controls the entire supply chain. That means manufacturing, wholesale, retail storefronts, and even prescription lens production all flow through the same corporate entity. The next largest competitor isn't remotely close.

When one company controls manufacturing, distribution, AND retail, the typical market forces that drive competition and keep prices in check are effectively neutralized.

The Designer Label Secret

Here's something that surprises many shoppers: the luxury fashion houses whose names appear on premium frames generally have nothing to do with actually making them. Chanel, Prada, Armani, and similar brands license their names to EssilorLuxottica, which handles all manufacturing. The frames then come back bearing the designer label — and the designer-level price tag.

EssilorLuxottica produces the product, splits the prestige markup with the label, and the consumer pays for the perception of luxury craftsmanship from a fashion house that never touched the glasses. Paying $400 for "Armani glasses" is largely paying for branding rights, not for Armani's manufacturing expertise.

The Eye Designs Perspective.

Understanding this landscape is exactly why independent optical boutiques like Eye Designs exist. We offer genuinely curated selections from independent designers and manufacturers who sit outside the EssilorLuxottica ecosystem — giving you real choice, real variety, and real expertise without the corporate middleman markup.

When you visit one of our locations in Scarsdale, Armonk, or Mamaroneck, you're getting honest guidance from people who care about finding the right frame for you — not steering you toward whatever frame best benefits the bottom line.

“Every year it is our honor to bring our readers the best of the best of independent optical retail in our industry,” said Deirdre Carroll, INVISION’s editor-in-chief. “But a business wouldn’t really fit our ‘Finest’ criteria if it weren’t an exceptional example of creative marketing, spectacular design, and a unique story. Each year, I am truly astounded by the caliber of entries we receive and this year is no exception!”

Stores are judged on exterior appearance, interior appearance/design, store biography, marketing, web presence and overall individuality by an expert panel of industry judges.

Eye Designs Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Block Party, Acts of Kindness Campaign!

Eye Designs has launched an Acts of Kindness campaign. The campaign, which will run through the end of the year, will feature 40 acts of kindness in recognition of Eye Designs’ 40th anniversary. The family-owned boutique eyewear business, which has locations in Scarsdale, Armonk and Mamaroneck, marked its 40th anniversary last month.

“We are proud and excited to kick off our 40 Acts of Kindness campaign,” said Sharon Decker, founder and co-owner of Eye Designs. “This campaign is our way of saying thank you to our customers and to our communities for their support, their friendship, and their business which have enabled us to celebrate the incredible milestone of being in business and serving Westchester residents for 40 years. Their support has meant the world to us, and now it’s our turn to support them in a special way.”

Decker and her son Harris, who is co-owner of Eye Designs, officially announced the kickoff of the Acts of Kindness campaign at Eye Designs’ 40th anniversary block party, which was held at its Scarsdale location on June 29th. More than 100 customers and area residents attended the block party, which featured music, local food trucks from Stamford’s Melt and Port Chester’s Bona Bona, a customer appreciation photo session, and special giveaways.

At the block party, Eye Designs announced its first Act of Kindness is a donation of 100 pairs of eyeglass frames to the Eastchester Lions Club. Eye Designs historically has collected used frames from the community and then donated the collected frames. Last year, it collected 1,000 used frames from the community for donation. As part of its 40 Acts of Kindness, Eye Designs is donating 100 frames from its inventory to the Lions Club.

“This is just the beginning. We will being doing acts of kindness that support the organizations, efforts, and people who mean so much to us, our family, and our business,” said Harris Decker. “Some of our acts will be announced in advance, others will be surprises for our customers and communities. All of them will demonstrate how much we appreciate them. They are our extended family.”

Eye Designs is a family business. Sharon Decker, who is a New York state licensed optician, opened the first Eye Designs, then called Eye Designs of Westchester, in Scarsdale, in June 1984. She was following the paths of her parents: her mother Gladys Mackler worked as a sales associate at local optical shops on Long Island and her father Mickey designed eyeglass stores. Her father designed the original Scarsdale location. Eye Designs expanded beyond its Scarsdale location in 1999 with the opening of a location in Armonk. The Mamaroneck location opened in 2021. Sharon’s son Harris Decker joined Eye Designs in 2014 and is now co-owner, marking the second generation of Deckers to lead Eye Designs and the third generation to work in the optical industries. Eye Designs sources all of its eyewear from independent makers in the states as well as overseas, offering customers unique styles and the latest designs.

“We’re excited for the many acts of kindness we have planned for the months ahead. And, of course, we’re proud to be starting our 41st year of Eye Designs and serving our wonderful customers and communities in Westchester,” added Sharon and Harris.

Eye Designs 40 Acts of Kindness

Eye Designs is marking its 40th anniversary. The family-owned boutique eyewear business, with locations in Scarsdale, Armonk and Mamaroneck, is celebrating its 40th year of serving customers in Westchester and beyond. To mark the celebration, Eye Designs will hold a block party celebration at its Scarsdale store, located at 747 White Plains Road, on Saturday, June 29th from 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm. Attendees will enjoy music, food from various food trucks, a customer appreciation photo session, and special giveaways.

“I’m so proud of this milestone because it means our customers appreciate what we offer – unique eyewear styles from independent brands and manufacturers combined with our personalized, family-focused service,” said Sharon Decker, founder and co-owner of Eye Designs. “We know the reason we are able to celebrate our 40th is because of our customers, who have supported us, continued to come back to us year after year, and, in essence, become our extended family.”

Eye Designs is a family business. Decker, who is a New York state licensed optician, opened the first Eye Designs, then called Eye Designs of Westchester, in Scarsdale, in June 1984. She was following the paths of her parents: her mother Gladys Mackler worked as a sales associate at local optical shops on Long Island and her father Mickey designed eyeglass stores. Her father designed the original Scarsdale location. “Our initial motto was ‘Manhattan Styles, Westchester Convenience.’ I thought local residents would want the top quality styles and service they might have associated with Madison Avenue in Manhattan, but they wanted it convenient to where they live, which was in Westchester.”

Today, this is still the company’s vision and motto. To provide convenience to its customers, Eye Designs expanded beyond its Scarsdale location in 1999 with the opening of a location in Armonk. The Mamaroneck location opened in 2021.

Ten years ago, Sharon’s son Harris Decker joined Eye Designs. He is now co-owner, marking the second generation of Deckers to lead Eye Designs and the third generation to work in the optical industry.

Today, both the Decker ownership and the customer base are multi-generational. “One of the best aspects of our business is working with customers who I first fit with glasses when they were children and I still work with today as adults. We are still their ‘go to’ store and now they are coming into our stores with their children, the next generation that we’re fitting for glasses. It’s so gratifying to be a part of their family history, as they are a part of ours,” added Sharon Decker.

Harris Decker notes the multi-generational aspect of both the business and customer base is reflective of their commitment to eyewear and service. “As a third generation in the optical business, eyewear is in my DNA. I enjoy sourcing styles from independent makers whether in the states or overseas, bringing these styles into our stores, and then seeing our customers’ faces light up when they see frames they have not seen anywhere else. They know they are buying something special you won’t see on everyone around town,” he noted. “I also know our customers appreciate when they come into our stores, they see familiar faces. Many of the people who work in our stores have been with us for decades; they, too, are extended family to the Deckers and to our customers.”

The 40th anniversary will also be the kickoff of Eye Designs’ 40 Acts of Kindness campaign. “Between now and the end of the year, we will be doing 40 acts of kindness as a way of giving back to our customers and also the communities that we are a part of,” added Sharon Decker. “This is just another way of our saying thank you to everyone.”

New collection alert: Dabrach

Dabrach is an independent eyewear company born in the middle of three beautiful lakes in Italy: Maggiore, Orta and Mergozzo. They design and produce, slowly and with care, handcrafted eyewear in Piemonte, Italy, working on small collections: few pieces characterized by particular colors and simple details.

Realized by expert craftsmen with the use of manual instruments and high quality materials, Dabrach’s production is made entirely in Italy: every detail, from the design to the final product, is given special attention in order to reach the best results for the patients that come to wear these frames every day.

Unusual yet simple shapes, make every frame unique. Every model is the result of a Dabrach original design: never too thin, always well-proportioned from the temple arms to the lenses. Finally, Dabrach uses only high quality Italian acetate, often from rare acetate sheets to achieve a spectacular design each and every time.

We fell in love with Dabrach the moment we saw the unique patterns and incredibly rich acetates used in their designs. Each frame comes in both optical and sunglass styles and they are perfect for a wide range of face sizes. Come see the entire collection at Eye Designs of Westchester today!

Introducing Blake Kuwahara

Recognized as one of the preeminent designers in eyewear today, Blake Kuwahara launched his exclusive eponymous range of sunglasses and optical frames in the Fall of 2014.

Kuwahara, who also has a doctorate of optometry degree from UC Berkeley, first gained international acclaim as the creator and designer of the exclusive KATA Eyewear brand. His groundbreaking use of engineering and production techniques to create texture and detail for KATA Eyewear reinvented the way eyewear design is approached today.

Kuwahara’s bold experimentation and innovation have gained him a following in the fashion media and has been profiled in Vogue, ELLE, Bazaar, GQ, In Style, and Esquire and has been seen on E!, Access Hollywood, MTV, and CNN. Buzz magazine voted Kuwahara one of the “100 Coolest People in Los Angeles” and Detour magazine called him, “a gifted talent, blessed with savvy and unmistakable sense of style.”

When we bring in a new line there has to be an IT factor. Something that makes it stand out from the crowded world of eyeglasses. When it comes to Blake Kuwahara it is the incredible attention to detail and quality. Made from the finest accetates, you can feel the quality the moment you pick them up. Taking up to 9 months to complete, these frames are the epitome of quality. Now availiable in the Scarsdale location, stop in and try them on for yourself.

Introducing Native Ken

'Made In America' is about as important now as it has ever been. Finding quality collections made inside the United States has always been a challenge. Many of the designs were dated and even worse, the quality exhibited by Japanese and European design houses lacked. That has changed with Native Ken.

Designed in New York City and handmade in California, Native Ken is doing what no other collection has. With a quirky modern take on some classic style ideas, Native Ken uses high quality accetates and wood finishes to create a product that not only looks great on your face, but feels great in your hands.

Eye Designs Exclusive: Mykita x Perlon Records

Manufactured and designed in Berlin, Germany, Mykita has partnered with Perlon Records for the release of a custom eyewear design, marking the 20-year anniversary of the music label. The resulting sunglasses represent minimalistic and experimental sensibilty that connects the two labels. The unique lens shape derives from the Perlon logo typeface, with all of the individual letters having been layered, rotated and melded to form the outline of the frames.

A characteristic Mykita stainless steel frame in a navigator style, the Perlon collaboration stands out via a subtly polygonal lens shape and bicolour surface pattern, a reference to the label’s iconic record sleeve designs. Limited to 50 pieces per color, the exclusive package pairs the sunglasses with, a 7-inch single by Markus Nikolai featuring sounds from the modern manufactory – it is the 115th release from the house of Perlon.

These frames are availiable exclusively at Eye Designs in three amazing colors! Stop in to see them all before they're gone for good.
